Episode Four - Third Article

 EPISODE FOUR

The first day in class was a mixture of joy and gloom for Mayowa. He was happy because he could sit among brilliant students from different places in the country and he was sad because he has no one to call his family. His parents were no more and his grandmother had recently passed away. However, he braced up and resolved in his mind that he would surely make it.

Days rolled into weeks and weeks to months in his new school. Soon, it was time for first term examination. Mayowa would wake up in the night and read with Emmanuel till daybreak and they would go to the exam hall when it was time. They would never go late to the examination hall. When the results were released, Mayowa topped the whole class. His performance was best in the whole school and this drew the attention of the Principal to him. Who is this new, excellent student? He asked in his mind. He called for him and gave him a token, to encourage him to keep it up. He asked about his parents and Mayowa told him everything, except his resolution in his mind that there was no God. The Principal sympathized with him and promised to watch over him as he would be helped by God.

Mayowa returned to his room and told Emmanuel all the things the Principal said, he also showed him the gift. Emmanuel was very happy for him, but still told him that he needed to believe on the Lord Jesus. Every achievement a person has, without having Jesus, cannot save his or her soul. Only Jesus Christ can save a man's soul. He continued his preaching and said, we were made to worship God. We were created to bring glory to him. Our obedience to receiving Jesus into our hearts is the first pleasing thing we do to God, other things only come after it, to be truly pleasing to God.

Mayowa told Emmanuel to keep quiet. He said that after all, he passes without God's contribution. He quoted the scriptures for Emmanuel that "Seest thou a man who is diligent in his business, he shall stand before Kings and not mere men - Proverbs 22:29." Emmanuel did not know what to say to convince Mayowa. He purposed in his heart that he would be praying for him.

One day, some of the missionaries in Aba-eegun village came to visit Mayowa in his school. He was so happy that he also had people that came to visit him. He had been observing many parents coming to visit their wards in school. Even Emmanuel's parents had visited him. Now, he has people who have come to visit him. He immediately took them to the Principal's office and introduced them as the Missionaries working in his village. They were the source of his being able to attend school. The Principal welcomed them and commended their efforts. He sought for their prayers and they prayed for him. He offered money and some fruits to the missionaries, but they humbly did not receive it. They truly appreciated the Principal. The Principal was not offended. He encouraged them to continue with God's work and prayed that it would continue to prosper in their hands. He saw them a little way off and returned to his office because he had a lot to attend to on his table.

Mayowa and the missionaries talked to a long extent. He asked about the welfare of the villagers, how his grandmother's burial went, how the Baale is doing, etc. He was told that the Baale had gone to rest. The village is really undergoing tremendous change. Electricity supply had been brought to the village. The government had established a school in the village. Good road network is being made available. Agricultural development is also taking place, a lot of things. The missionaries however asked about his salvation experience and he told them that he had resolved in his mind that there was no God as God should not have allowed his grandmother to die when he needed someone to be related with, knowing fully well his parents were no more and that was the only person left as a family to him. The missionaries explained to him that his grandmother had to leave because she was old and her time was up. Mayowa refused to listen. The missionaries prayed for him and promised to always remember him in prayers. They gave him money, cloth items and some necessary materials for his education and comfort. They returned to their place of assignment and Mayowa returned to his room. He thought about everything for a while and still waved off all the admonitions to receive Jesus Christ.
